The Best Road Trips in Northern Minnesota
Destinations Near and on the Way to Odyssey Resorts

Road trips provide freedom you don’t get with other forms of travel. When you drive yourself, you can travel at your own pace and stop whenever the moment seizes you. If you’re in the car with loved ones, you can pass the time with games and conversation that make the trip just as fun as the destination. When you have your car with you, you can set off from your destination and take in sights off the beaten path. Compared to air travel, you trade the security lines for rolling open country while listening to your favorite music.

Odyssey Resorts is a destination for many road-trippers, and it’s easy to see why. Not only are the roads to Odyssey filled with wonderful sights and curiosities, but a stay at Odyssey Resorts brings you close to some of the best day trips in the country. Below are a few reasons why people love the roads to Odyssey and some of our favorite places to drive from our resorts.

Road trips can make vacations feel more like adventures. That might be why nothing says family vacation quite like a road trip.

The Best Day Trips from Odyssey Resorts

Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory

Located in Duluth, a short drive from Beacon Pointe, this observatory is a destination for wildlife enthusiasts and families alike. Visitors can get up close to some of America's most fascinating wild birds. With live bird demonstrations and kid's activities, there’s something for everyone. The best time to visit is during spring or fall to watch bird migration.

International Wolf Center

This center provides education about local wildlife by allowing visitors to get up close and personal with wolves. Learn about arctic and grey wolves while seeing them eat, play, and howl. Located in Ely, Minnesota, this center is under a 2-hour drive from a few of our resorts including Grand Superior Lodge and Lutsen Sea Villas.

Oberg Mountain

Located in Lutsen, MN, a short drive to Oberg Mountain will take you to a beautiful three-mile trail that ends with a spectacular view of Oberg Lake and lush green surrounding. This hike is extra special during the fall as the leaves change.

The Magnetic Rock

An easy hike down a three-mile trail will lead you to this geological curiosity: a 60-foot rock with a magnetic pull—seriously, bring your compass or a magnet and see for yourself. About an hour north of East Bay Suites, this phenomenon is worth the trip.

Summit Express Gondola

This gondola will take you on a scenic, relaxing ride above Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains, providing countless photo opportunities. After your ride, enjoy drinks and a meal at the nearby Moguls Grille & Taproom, your launchpad for the next adventure.

Devil’s Kettle Falls
Until recently, this waterfall was a mystery to scientists and hikers. It was only in 2017 that it was discovered where the water from the falls went. Even though the mystery has been solved, it’s still a sight to behold to watch this large waterfall, seem to vanish the water that runs through it completely.

Hollow Rock

This natural wonder seems right out of a fantasy movie. Seeing this arched rock protruding from the middle of the lake is simply worth admiring. Hollow Rock sits on the water near Grand Portage, where you can discover more history of Minnesota’s North Shore. Just a short distance from Grand Portage, there’s a beautiful two-and-a-half-mile trail to the peak of Mount Josephine, where you’ll get a stunning view of Canada to the North and Minnesota to the South. Take in the view and have a moment of peace and serenity.
