Summer Fun on the North Shore
You don’t need to buy airline tickets or spend the day in the car to experience an epic summer vacation. The area is home to some of the best hiking, biking and running trails in the Midwest. There is also an abundance of historical and cultural activities and a thriving food and beverage scene.
Here are a few of our favorite summer activities to help plan your trip.
The Superior Hiking Trail
The 300 mile- plus Superior Hiking Trail is a favorite for hikers, bikers, and runners of all skill levels. Starting in Duluth, the trail stretches through eight state parks on the way to the Canadian border. Exploring the trail is a great way to experience nature on the North Shore, and it's easily accessible from all our properties. Plus, the trail hosts much endurance running races throughout the year, including the Superior 100, one of the country’s premier ultra-marathons.
Kayak, Canoe, and Paddleboard
There is no better way to get some adventure and exercise than kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding the largest freshwater lake in the world. Paddle beneath the towering cliffs and visit the site of a shipwreck. Or, take a break for lunch on the beach and hunt for agates. Another option is a guided tour of the St. Louis River Estuary, to get up close with nature. There are several retailers in and around the city of Duluth to rent equipment and arrange your day of fun on the water.
Mountain Tram and Alpine Slide
One of our favorite ways to see the North Shore is from a chairlift at Lutsen’s Eagle Mountain headed to the starting line for the Alpine Slide. Once you arrive, take a minute to look around and take in the sights and sounds. Then, hop on your slide and cruise down the half-mile track to the base of the mountain. This is fun for the whole family. Children ages 2-5 are free with a paying adult.
Waterfall season rolls on at the North Shore. A stay with Odyssey Resorts means you’re never far away from the awe-inspiring power and beauty of a North Shore waterfall. Listen to the roar of the rushing water and get lost in one of nature’s most stunning displays. There are more than a dozen parks to visit along the Lake Superior coastline. One of our favorites is Tettegouche State Park, home to three waterfalls including The Cascades, the tallest in Minnesota.
For new or serious golfers, it doesn’t get much better than a round at Superior National. Enjoy spectacular views of Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains on the fun and challenging 18-hole course. Or, pack your shoes for a round of FootGolf with the kids on the Mountain 9. Take advantage of Odyssey Resorts’ special ‘stay and play’ golf packages and tee it up this summer at one of the premier courses in the Midwest.
Arts and Crafts
Grand Marais comes alive in the summer and is a popular destination for artists and crafters. Visit the Grand Marais Art Colony, the oldest in Minnesota, or learn a new craft at the North House Folk School. Make sure to stop at one of Grand Marais’ many art galleries. When you are done indulging your creative side, refuel at one of the local restaurants, taverns or breweries. Let your inner artist shine with a summer visit to Grand Marais.
