Experience small-town romance in the harbor town of Grand Marais on Minnesota’s North Shore. You’ll find sensational views, fun adventures, artsy shops, and an overall cute small time vibe.
Be sure to pick up romantic supplies on your way up the shore. Stop in at the North Shore Winery for locally made cider and wine. Once you make it to Grand Marais, head over to Gunflint Mercantile to grab freshly made sweets; they pair nicely with wine!
Settle into your romantic weekend getaway at East Bay Suites and take a minute to check out the amazing views of the lake!
Pro Tip: Book the 1-Bedroom Deluxe Suite to enjoy the deep soaking tub and be sure to bring candles or ask the front desk.
Start the day off right by grabbing a coffee from Java Moose and a donut from World’s Best Donuts before making your way out to Artists’ Point to watch the sunrise over Lake Superior. There is nothing more romantic than watching the sun’s vibrant colors bloom over Lake Superior’s horizon as it peaks through the clouds.
After your romantic morning, you’ll feel energized to take on the beautiful Northwoods. Before venturing out, consider stopping at Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply to pick up any gear you may want to make your journey more comfortable or simply get the local insider on places to explore. To experience one of the best overlooks in the area head to Honeymoon Bluff – roughly 27-miles up the Gunflint Trail. This short vertical hike will take you to a stunning overlook vista of Bearskin and Hungry Jack Lake. Once you make it to the top, you won’t second guess how this place got its name.
After driving up the Gunflint Trail and hiking Honeymoon Bluff, you’ve probably worked up an appetite for lunch. Just up the road is the Trail Center and Poplar Haus Restaurants. Both are excellent choices, and the food will absolutely blow your socks off. If dining with a lake view is essential then the Poplar Haus has an incredible view of Poplar Lake.
End the day back in Grand Marais with a craft beer at Voyageur Brewing Company because what’s a day exploring without a much deserved cold one. Grab a growler to go, it might come in handy for game night back in your suite – board games are available in the Stone’s Throw Lobby at East Bay Suites.
Stay in – enjoy your amazing suite and beautiful lake views. But if picking out a special gift for your loved one sounds fun then consider spending the day walking around town checking out all the local shops. You’ll find everything from thrift stores, fashion wear, books, outdoor gear, homemade fudge, to art galleries.
If your looking for a quick lunch to keep shopping then you should stop in at Hungry Hippie Tacos for some northern-style tacos. If your feeling like a romantic lunch then walk over to the Angry Trout Cafe and request a dockside table. Enjoy a beautiful setting and fresh-caught fish or one of their other regionally sourced options.
Before heading back to relax in your suite make sure to stop at the Gunflint Tavern to make dinner reservations – they typically fill up most nights in summer and fall. The tavern offers upscale pup food and brewed in house micro beer among other specialty drinks and regionally sourced entrees. Live music is also common on weekends and some midweek nights. If the weather is nice head up to the rooftop patio before or after your meal to take in the stunning views and another beverage or two.
Get up early to enjoy one last sunrise right outside your window. Make a hearty breakfast in your suite or walk across the street to Blue Water Cafe for a classic diner experience. Before heading out of town soak up those last views of the harbor on the main street as you drive out of town. Lucky for you, the drive home on Highway 61 will be just as scenic as the drive up and if time permits there are a few worthy pit-stops you can make to stretch your legs. Sugarloaf Cove just outside of Tofte is one place to consider on your way home. There is a 1-mile trail that you can take down to the shoreline which makes for a picture-perfect spot.
