Happy late autumn from the Northland! The last couple of weeks were full of pleasantly cool temperatures that made our walks through the woods delightful. We are well aware that these glorious days of late autumn are drawing to a close, which makes the time spent outdoors all the more special.

Hikes these past couples of weeks took us far up the north shore of Lake Superior as we visited Paradise beach to stretch our legs along the shore while watching the waves roll in, and then closer to home as we visited Hogback Lake and Eighteen Lake trails.

Back at home, our gardening season has come to a close but not without great busyness in the kitchen, where we’ve been canning, dehydrating, and freezing our garden’s bountiful harvest.

Apples from Bayfield are one of the greatly anticipated treats for our autumn season. Here is a recipe that captures the flavors of autumn while showcasing how delicious a locally grown apple can be. Enjoy!

6 apples
1/2 C. water
1/3 C. white sugar
1 C. cranberries
Juice and zest of 1 orange
1/4 t. cinnamon
1/8 t. nutmeg
Peel, core and slice apples. Combine with rest of ingredients and simmer until apples and cranberries are very soft, about ½ hr.

Unforgettable experiences from Duluth to Grand Marais. When it comes to the North Shore, we’re wherever you want to be.
