Discovering Tischer Creek

Close
Locally known

Hidden within city limits

We are very fortunate to be centrally located at Larsmont Cottages. So when the mood strikes, you can either head up the shore or head into the city. Of course, Duluth is the city I'm referring to. Duluth has far more than just Canal Park and Grandma's restaurant. There are dozens of beautiful trails, creeks, rivers, and parks for you to explore. Among these beautiful places is one of my favorite spots—the surprisingly beautiful Tischer Creek.

Tischer Creek lies in the heart of the east end of Duluth and runs through Congdon Park. The name of which you may be familiar with if you have ever seen or taken a tour of the Glensheen Mansion and as the creek ends its journey flowing into Lake Superior after traveling through the mansion grounds. Years ago, I was told to go check out Tischer Creek as a fun little spot to fish for rainbow trout. It became so much more to me than just a fishing hole.

To this day, when I have an hour or two to spare, I head to Tischer Creek for a quick hike with my dog. Each time I pay a visit to the creek, it has something new to show me, making for great picture opportunities. Duluth, along with the North Shore, never fails to provide beauty and splendor. Tischer is a place where when you start your hike along the creek, and as you go, it opens up more beauty, making for a "wow factor" of an experience.

Congdon Park is in two sections. For the most part, an upper and a lower. You can access the trail from either area. You will find three trails. An upper trail that is paved, a trail halfway down in the gorge, and a trail that runs right along the creek. Oh. Yes, I said the gorge. In the lower section of the creek, you will walk through a beautiful gorge. It is a true escape from everything around you. When you are walking along the creek, and through the gorge, you will swear you are somewhere else that is not in the heart of town.

The creek presents itself with some unique and even somewhat breathtaking beauty. There are dozens of smaller waterfalls, cascades, natural water slides, and a weeping rock that you'll have to see in person. Bridges and stairs that were built there during the CCC/WPA era make the hike along the creek an adventure because as you go across the bridges and up or down the stairs, you cannot see what awaits you on the other end, but when you get up/down or across it reveals itself. It will truly make you say, "I wish I had known about this sooner" or "Know what? I've driven past this a few times and never stopped". This time aren't you happy you did?

As I write about my favorite places along the shore, I am already thinking about where I'll go next. Just writing about and thinking about Tischer Creek has helped me make my decision easy. I am going to take Jade (my dog) and do some exploring along the creek. "Exploring?" you may ask. "Haven't you been there before?" Yes, I have many times, but like I said, each time I find something new and discover something in a different light. The moral of the story is, don't ever go to one spot, one time, and say you have seen it. Because you can always see the same place but in a different season, and it will feel like a new experience each time.

I'll see you at Tischer Creek. Again, I'll be the grown-up acting like a giddy ten year old taking it all in.
