Adventure in the BWCA

BWCAW, or Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, is the official designation of the million-acre designated wilderness area, much of which surrounds the upper areas of the Gunflint Trail. Within its borders are more than 1,000 lakes, 2,200 campsites and 1,500 miles of canoe routes. Enough to keep any of us busy for a while. As a managed and protected wilderness area, permits are required and a variety of rules apply, so remember to reserve your permit. Wilderness canoeing and camping usually utilizes lighter gear, incorporates dried foods with fresh, and requires advance reservations so the quota of folks entering at any given point on any given day is not exceeded.
